It won’t activate the power lift gate unless you hold is for a second. I have only had my CX50 for the past few days. On two occasions the button inside the car would not open the tailgate.

Both times all I had to do was disconnect the negative terminal on the battery for about 30 seconds.. then reconnect, and that’s it, the rear gate will auto-reset. If it still doesn't work, open the liftgate manually from the inside, then close it, and try again. If that doesn't work either, it should be brought to the dealer.
